Soaking in a float tank for the first time is a very unique experience. Float tanks can provide many benefits, with studies showing that float tank participants experience improved moods, sleep, reduced stress, and less physical pain. In a float tank, you float in a darkened pod filled with buoyant saltwater, which can help you experience a deep state of relaxation. Here are a few tips for making the most of your first visit to a float tank:
Plan to Turn Your Phone Off
The whole point of the float tank experience is to unplug and unwind. If you leave your phone on you might be distracted by notifications or phone calls. It's also possible you will feel the need to check your phone out of habit, even if the ringer is off. Think of this as a rare opportunity to not be totally tethered to electronic devices. Leave your phone off in the changing area, and embrace the quiet and solitude of the float pod.
Protect Your Skin From the Salt
While floating in saltwater will likely leave your joints and muscles feeling amazing, it can be a bit rough on your skin if you're not prepared. Avoid shaving for a few days before your float tank experience, as freshly shaven skin may be too tender for the saltwater.
If you have any cuts on your skin, you can coat them in petroleum jelly before you get into the float tank. This creates a protective barrier to prevent any stinging sensations. In fact, your float tank center may have petroleum jelly for you in the changing area outside of your float pod.
Try Out Different Positions
As your body gets used to the buoyancy of the float tank, be sure to stretch your limbs and try different positions for floating. For example, you may want to start out your float tank experience with your arms stretched out at your sides or above your head and your legs stretched out in front of you. Next, you might try sitting upright and experiencing the different sensations as you move around.
The buoyant water can help you feel more limber. Take advantage of this and you will feel like you just had a massage or went to a great yoga class by the end of your float session.
When you visit a float tank for the first time and follow these tips, you will be sure to leave feeling deeply relaxed and content.
