What To Expect After Your Breast Augmentation

If you've recently gotten a breast augmentation, you likely did a lot of research about the procedure itself. After all, selecting an experienced plastic surgeon is necessary to give yourself the best possible results. However, you may not know what to expect immediately following your cosmetic surgery. Here are four things you should expect after your breast augmentation.

1. You will need to wear a surgical bra after your procedure.

You may have plans to go clothes shopping for your new body type, but that will have to wait until your body has healed. After your breast augmentation, you will be given a surgical bra to wear for the initial healing process. This bra provides compression to the area, which can help to limit swelling. Your doctor will advise you when you can stop wearing this bra regularly, but in the meantime, you should only take it off to shower and change your bandages.

2. You may be sore after the anesthesia wears off.

During your procedure, you will be put under general anesthesia. When you first wake up, you will still have anesthetic drugs in your system. As those drugs wear off, you may begin to notice soreness in your chest. This soreness may be particularly pronounced if you had your implants placed beneath your pectoral muscles.

3. You will probably want someone to help you.

In the first few days after your cosmetic surgery, you may find that your muscles feel stiff. Raising your arms may feel particularly painful, so you should avoid anything that causes you significant pain during this time. If possible, it's a good idea to have a friend or family member stay with you temporarily. Having someone who can help you bathe, fix meals, and get your medication can be a huge help during this time.

4. You should take a break from your workout routine.

Exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle. However, you'll need to take it easy right after your breast augmentation. In order to let your body fully heal, you should avoid doing strenuous exercise for at least a week. According to WebMD, you should not lift anything heavy for at least six weeks after your procedure.

When in doubt, wait until your plastic surgeon clears you for exercise. It's best to err on the side of caution since you don't want to do anything to jeopardize your new breast implants. For more information, speak with the surgeon who is performing your cosmetic surgery.
