4 Ways to Reduce Stubborn Acne

Acne is a common problem. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, at least 85% of people will experience acne in their youth. Unfortunately, the fact that it's a common condition doesn't make it any less upsetting. If you struggle with acne, you may be embarrassed about your complexion and deal with low self-esteem, but you don't have to continue to suffer from acne. Here are four treatments that can eliminate even the most stubborn acne:

1. Extraction

If you have an important event coming up or if you have a stubborn pimple that won't seem to heal, extraction is a treatment option. For this treatment, you will visit your dermatologist or esthetician, who will use a clean sharp tool to lance your pimples. They will then apply gentle pressure to drain the blemish. Blackheads can also be extracted using a slightly different tool with a round opening. This procedure isn't painful, and it can help you get rid of unsightly pimples immediately. Remember not to touch your face after an extraction, since the extraction sites will be open wounds that could potentially get infected.

2. Chemical peel

Chemical peels are offered at some dermatologist offices and spas. As the name suggests, during this treatment, chemicals are applied carefully to your face and allowed to work before being removed. The chemicals will cause your face to peel, which can remove dirt and bacteria from your pores. It can also slough off dead skin to give you a smoother and more radiant complexion. Many acne sufferers report a decrease in acne following their chemical peel.

3. Phototherapy

Phototherapy is also called light therapy, and it's a minimally invasive technique used to treat acne. Your doctor will give you eye protection before shining blue or red light on the affected parts of your face. The powerful lights work to eliminate acne by killing the bacteria that causes it.

4. Accutane

Accutane is also known as isotretinoin. It's an oral medication that's derived from vitamin A and used to treat moderate to severe acne. Typically, patients take this medication for four to five months. After the treatment is over, your skin will be clear and it should stay clear even after you discontinue Accutane. Since Accutane is a very strong drug, your doctor will monitor your health while you're on it; you'll have to take regular blood tests to make sure you aren't having an adverse reaction to the drug.
